i'm totally not rabid for this band or anything: a luna sea fanpage

hi you read that title right so let's get straight into it

who's luna sea?

luna sea (or lunacy) is a japanese rock band that formed in 1986. members include inoran (rhythm guitar), j (bass), sugizo (lead guitar, violin), ryuichi (vocals), and shinya (drums). they are considered one of the big bands of early visual kei.
throughout the years, they've spanned rock genres and band images. many fans like their flashy 90s hard rock stuff more than their cleaner 00s alternative stuff but i like all sides of luna sea equally and i respect their ability to transverse genres and still sound great :D

why do you like this band so much?
what is your history with them?

i feel that luna sea is a one-of-a-kind j-rock group. the members' different influences come together in a way that creates a unique sound. for example, the drummer, shinya, learned taiko drums when he was a kid and the guitarist, sugizo, learned the violin.
i got into their music during my senior year of high school. ironically, their first song i got into was "i for you", a song from an early 00s j-drama that was really different from most of their music. from there, i got into their harder rock songs. though i didn't understand the lyrics at the time, their earlier music inspired the feeling of my art and writing, and the influence is still there in some of my art today.
a few years later, i got into translating, and one of the first songs i decided to translate was a luna sea song. i felt artistic and personal connections to their song lyrics. this rekindled my love for the band!

favorite album

probably "mother"(1994)! it's peak luna sea to me. i love most if not all of the songs in there. i like how the first song and last song are lyrically kind of like cinematic parallels to each other too lol. i'm saddened that neither of them are on spotify orz
here's a music video for one of the songs from the album! (i still don't get why it's called true blue when there's a lot of red backgrounds in the video)

favorite member

i like ryuichi a lot. no matter what genre he's singing, his voice always fits! i've also listened to some of his music from his solo career ("glass", "love is...") and i like those too. maybe this sounds kinda cliche but i think there's no other voice out there in the v-kei scene like his.
well... maybe except for ONE person...

this is tamutamu, he's a somewhat viral ryuichi impersonator. he has millions of views on youtube and he can be found on japanese variety shows singing in ryuichi's 00s/10s vocal style.

keep tamutamu in mind because he'll be important later on

my merch collection

aight here's my favorite part of the post!!! first of all, here are my luna sea albums i got while i was visiting california a year ago (you can read more about my trip in the diary section under july 21)!

here's a plush bunny keychain i got online. it's cute and subtle and i carry it around on my purse a lot!

this is my dvd of luna sea's first and only concert in los angeles! if they come to america or any neighboring country i WILL fly over to see them. i'm so desperate come backkkkkkkkkkkk

this is one of my favorite items as someone who likes sanrio. it's a small drawstring bag from luna sea's collab with kuromi!

ryuichi photocard that i decorated myself. in hindsight i should have put kuromi stickers on it instead

lastly, here is my luna sea tshirt. this 10th anniversary concert happened before i was born btw so i didn't really go there. fake fan

strange collabs

my other favorite part of the post!!!
several months ago, luna sea had the aforementioned collaboration with kuromi. i gotta show you the art for it, it's so cute...

let's get into the actually strange ones. a couple of years ago, they had a collaboration with biore. the skincare brand. look at these illustrations they're so scrunkly

this one is gonna sound crazy. remember mulan? the disney movie? luna sea's song "breathe" was used as a bonus song in the CD of the japanese mulan soundtrack (i don't think it was in the actual movie so this is a little confusing to me). from what i can see online, a couple of luna sea's tour concerts in 1998 may have been sponsored by disney! i haven't seen vids from it anywhere, so i don't know how much mulan stuff was in there.

and finally, mcdonalds japan recently released this commercial to promote one of their burgers. they did so by parodying one of luna sea's most popular songs! curiously, none of the band members actually appear in the ad, everyone in the commercial are just actors. but they really captured the feeling of the music video from 30 years ago which isn't something you can say about most remakes!

remember tamutamu? he sang rosier for this ad, and ryuichi himself directed him on how to sing it!!! he did it he made it big!!!!!!!
the english text about cheese replacing the english text from the original music video has been sending me.

thank you for reading my nerdy ramblings about this little known band!!
